Karen Heffernan, PhD
I am a clinical psychologist/psychoanalyst in private practice in New York and Westfield, New Jersey and have been working clinically with individuals and couples for over 20 years. I am on the teaching faculty of The Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of NJ (CPPNJ) and am Director of their Supervision Training Program, as well as a faculty member of their New Jersey Couples Therapy Training Program (NJCTTP).
In addition to my training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), I have received training at the Tavistock Institute for Relationships in London. In my individual work, I specialize in the treatment of trauma, in particular with adults who experienced childhood sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse. This has enabled me to work well with couples where one or both partners has a history of trauma that is impacting the relationship.
In my work with couples, I try to give both partners the experience of being seen and heard by me as we repair their ability to do this for each other. I want to make space for partners to safely explore and share their hurt and instill hope that they can step out of destructive scripts that have played out over and over between them. I am gentle but active in my approach and am flexible in finding what works best for different couples.
